Una cursa d’orientació és una activitat esportiva camp a través, contrarellotge i sense itinerari prefixat, on el participant ha de passar per uns controls assenyalats en un mapa en el menor temps possible i amb l’ajuda d’una brúixola.
En totes les curses hi ha diferents nivells i categories de manera que és apte per tots els col·lectius i generacions, des de nivell escolar, en petits grups d’amics o familiars, com el més alt nivell de competició internacional.
Les curses d’orientació es poden portar a terme des boscos, ciutats, parcs, jardins, llacs, pavellons esportius o fins i tot en la pròpia llar. El mapa és l’element essencial, que conté tota la informació per trobar els diferents controls.
